Statistics & Data

National
  • The number of homeless is difficult to determine because estimates vary depending on the methodology used. Numbers also vary substantially depending on whether a measurement is taken on a single night or over the course of a given year.
  • According to a statement from the National Alliance to End Homelessness, "most Americans underestimate how the problem of homelessness affects families. About 600,000 families and 1.35 million children experience homelessness in the United States.”
Idaho
Nez Perce County
  • The minimum wage in Idaho as of July 24, 2009 is $7.25/hour (US Department of Labor). That means that before tax wages of a single parent working 40 hours/week is $1160/mon or $13,920/year.
  • Yet if you run the numbers on the Economic Policy Institute website, you will find that a single parent with 2 children would need to earn $38,091/year just to meet the basic needs in Nez Perce County.
  • This does not cover saving for an emergency, unexpected medical bills, or funds for a savings account.
  • All families living in poverty are simply one paycheck away from becoming completely homeless.
Lewiston & Clarkston Valley
  • The Lewiston School District had 80 homeless students in the 2010-20011 school year.
  • There were homeless students enrolled in Clarkston School District during 2010-2011.
Family Promise of Lewis Clark Valley
